It runs a large share of the world's online shops, and the reason is arithmetic. There is no monthly platform rent, no slice of each sale going to the software vendor, and no feature that is off-limits because it sits on a higher tier.
Its hosting needs are particular, though. Baskets and checkout pages deliberately skip page caching, so a shop leans on object caching, PHP workers and database speed in places where a blog would coast along untroubled.

Is WooCommerce genuinely free?
The core is, and payments cost you only the gateway's own fee. Money appears later as premium extensions for specialised jobs such as subscriptions or bookings. Plenty of shops run for years on nothing but the core plus a payment plugin.
What sort of hosting does WooCommerce want?

Can I set the PHP version myself?

How do I pay, and does it bill again on its own?
Orders go through a secure checkout by credit or debit card, and the renewal is taken at the same price you first paid. Every invoice sits in the client area for you to read, and switching auto-renewal off is a toggle in your account rather than a phone call.
Who actually runs the company?
Hosting Seller is a trading name of Bohzo Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales — a real business with a public record and terms published under English law. Looking that up is worth doing about any host before you hand over your domain.
Does hosting come with mailboxes?
It does — mailboxes on your own domain ship with every hosting plan, with webmail, IMAP, POP and SMTP access and spam filtering fitted as standard. There is also standalone email hosting for domains whose website lives somewhere else entirely.
What uptime do you commit to, and who is watching?
We commit to 99.9% uptime and watch it continuously. That figure is an operational target rather than a poster line, and the alerting behind it usually has an engineer on a problem before the first customer notices anything is wrong.
